“As the countries went into lockdown due to the quarantine, the beginning of the previous year was complicated for all the airlines. Nevertheless, since April we have recorded an obvious growth in the number of flights. June was an exceptionally distinguished month due to the number of overflights which in comparison to the same month of 2020 increased by 150 percent, whereas the overall scope of flights increased by 130 percent”, claimed the Chief Executive Officer of state enterprise Oro Navigacija Saulius Batavičius.

Analysis of aerodrome flight intensity shows that the number of flights from Vilnius increased by 19 percent, whereas the number of flights from Kaunas grew by 11 percent. While comparing the results of 2020 and 2021 it can be noticed that the number of flights in Palanga decreased by almost one fifth (namely – 19 percent) and the number of flights in Šiauliai decreased by more than 4 percent. Last year Vilnius Air Traffic Control Centre provided services to 24.8 thousand flights approximately and Kaunas Air Traffic Control Centre provided services to 6.8 thousand flights.

“Our data shows that the main countries that the aircraft flies to and from the Republic of Lithuania include the United Kingdom, Germany, Latvia, Denmark and Poland. The overflights across our country are usually to the Russian Federation, Germany, Latvia, Poland and Finland”, observed S. Batavičius.

According to him, the peak day of the whole year was the 17th of September 2021, when 673 aircraft crossed the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania. S. Batavičius noted that every day the air traffic controllers of the enterprise ensure safe air traffic within the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania and prevent any possible aviation incidents, by providing the instructions and recommendations required for a safe flight.

TOP 5 airlines in accordance with the number of flights executed within the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania were AirBaltic, Ryanair, Aeroflot, Finnair and Lufthansa. The most significant increase in the number of flights in comparison to 2020 was demonstrated by Ryanair (a growth of more than 70 percent) and the third runner-up Finnair (a growth of 27 percent). In 2020 the leading airline AirBaltic executed 9.5 thousand flights, while in 2021 the number of flights reached 11.6 thousand (a growth of 24 percent).

As it was stated by S.
