Even though it is difficult to keep up with the results of 2019, May of this year can be singled out for a significant growth of the number of flights. During the last year the number of flights increased by 53 percent and amounted to 11.6 thousand of flights.
“Evaluating the results of May, we actually noticed a growth in the number of flights, which was the most prominent during the last week of the month and even turned it into the most successful week during the entire pandemic. We can see that the last week of the month was marked by growing numbers in the whole European network, whereas the forecasts of EUROCONTROL were more positive and optimistic than they were before”, - stated the Acting Chief Executive Officer of state enterprise Oro Navigacija Redvita Četkauskienė.
In May the number of overflights doubled and reached 9.2 thousand flights. During the previous month most of the overflights across Lithuania were to the Russian Federation, thus, air traffic controllers provided services to 3701 flights. Germany came second with 1232 flights, while China was in the third place with 499 flights.
Summing up the terminal flights in May, the biggest number of flights were to Germany (124 flights), Latvia (11 flights) and Poland (93 flights).
During May most of the flights within the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania were operated by Aeroflot (828 flights), AirBaltic (654 flights) and Pobeda Airlines, the aircraft of which crossed the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania 458 flights.
In May the biggest number of aircraft took off and landed at Vilnius Airport, where services were provided to 1575 aircraft, which is three times more than during the same period last year. 413 aircraft (52 percent more than last year) received services at Kaunas Airport, air traffic controllers at Šiauliai Airport provided services to 260 aircraft (23 percent more than last year), while at Palanga Airport services were provided to almost three times more aircraft, in comparison to last year, namely, 122 aircraft.
The peak day of the month was the 29th of May. 422 aircraft were up in the airspace above the Republic of Lithuania.
About the air navigation services provided by the enterprise:
In every country seeking to ensure that flights take place safely, efficiently and on time, aircraft are provided air navigation services from the moment the aircraft leaves the parking zone until it lands at the destination airport. State enterprise Oro Navigacija provides these services within the Lithuanian airspace and at Lithuanian airports.
The airlines pay route and terminal charges for using the airspace and the air navigation services provided within it. These charges comprise the reimbursement of the expenses incurred by the country, the airspace of which is used. Oro Navigacija covers its expenses from its main activity, i.e., delivery of air navigation services, entirely, and is not maintained from the state budget.
