The total number of flights as well as the number of transit flights increased during the year

London, Riga, Warsaw, Copenhagen and Moscow are the top five destination cities to which the biggest number of flights from international Lithuanian airports of Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga and Šiauliai were directed in 2019. The number of flights attended to by the specialists of Oro Navigacija in all four Lithuanian airports this year increased from a few to several percent in comparison to 2018.

The employees working in four subdivisions of state enterprise Oro Navigacija located in Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga and Šiauliai attended to more aircraft during the last year. In 2019 there were 47.5 thousand of taking off and landing aircraft attended to in Vilnius (i.e. 0.5 percent more than during the same period in 2018), 9.9 thousand in Kaunas (4.5 percent more than in 2018), 5.6 thousand in Šiauliai (11.2 percent more than in 2018), 4.6 thousand in Palanga (2.5 percent more than in 2018).

Both the overall number of flights and the number of transit flights within Lithuanian airspace increased during the last year. During the twelve months of 2019 there were 269.2 thousand of flights attended to, three fourths (76 percent or 204.3 thousand) out of which, as it is customary, were transit flights. The overall number of flights in comparison to 2018 grew by 1.23 percent per year, the number of transit flights grew by 1.1 percent respectively.

The peak of all the flights attended to was the 27th of July, Saturday. On that day the air traffic controllers attended to the biggest amount of flights per day in the Lithuanian airspace – 968 flights in total. While the peak day for aircraft transiting the Lithuanian airspace last year was the 3rd of August, Saturday. 764 aircraft crossing Lithuania were attended to on that day.

Oro Navigacija covers its expenses from its main activity, namely, provision of air navigation services, entirely, and thus it is not maintained from the state budget.

Oro Navigacija manages four Air Traffic Control Centres and Area Control Centre as well.

The Area Control Centre provides flight control services to aircraft crossing the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania by transit and at height higher than 3 km. This centre services Vilnius flight information region – the airspace, located over the land of the state and a certain part of the Baltic Sea (total area – 76 thousand 126 square kilometres).

Vilnius Aerodrome Control Centre provides flight control, information provision and warning services in the surroundings of Vilnius airport and within the airport, i.e. while the aircraft approach for landing, are landing, taking off and moving within the airport.

Kaunas Air Traffic Control Centre provides flight control, information provision and warning services in the surroundings of Kaunas airport and within the airport, i.e. while the aircraft approach for landing, are landing, taking off and moving within the airport.

Palanga Air Traffic Control Centre provides flight control, information provision and warning services in the surroundings of Palanga airport and within the airport, i.e. while the aircraft approach for landing (when approximately 80 km remain to the airport), are landing, taking off and moving within the airport.

Šiauliai Air Traffic Control Centre provides flight control, information provision and warning services in the surroundings of Šiauliai airport and within the airport, i.e. while the aircraft approach for landing, are landing, taking off and moving within the airport.

The airlines pay route and terminal charges for using the airspace and the air navigation services provided within it. These funds constitute the reimbursement for the expenses incurred by the country the airspace of which is used.

For example, when the aircraft fly across the Lithuanian airspace, but take off or land in the airports of other countries, the airlines pay route charges for the air navigation services provided to the airlines during such flights. When the aircraft take off from one of the Lithuanian airports, the terminal charges are paid for the air navigation services provided to the airlines.
