In August flight number increases by 3.6 per cent

In August the number of flights handled in the Lithuanian airspace made up 27 thousand and was by 3.6 per cent higher than in the same time last year. On the peak day, the 3rd of August, Saturday, Oro navigacija’s specialists handled 944 flights, i.e. by 5.2 per cent more, compared to last year’s peak day 30th of August.

Overflights accounted for three quarters of all flights handled in the Lithuanian airspace in August, their number reached 20.9 thousand and was higher by 4.2 per cent, compared to the same period last year, according to the State Enterprise Oro navigacija, Lithuanian Air Navigation Service Provider.

In August the largest number of flights were handled in Vilnius airport; their number made up 4.2 thousand and was lower by 1.3 per cent, compared to last year’s August. There were 900 flights handled in Kaunas (by 0.7 more than in the same period last year). In Šiauliai and Palanga respectively 777 and 524 flights were handled (increase by 36.1 and 9.6 per cent).

According to the data of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, Eurocontrol, during the summer months over 35 thousand flights were daily operated in Europe.

According to the Multilateral Agreement Lithuania has delegated the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) billing and collection of charges on its behalf. Costs of billing and collection of charges are covered by airspace users.

Airlines pay the route air navigation service charges for the services provided during overflights. When aircraft take off from/land at one of the Lithuanian airports, the terminal air navigation service charges are paid by airlines.

Costs of SE Oro navigacija are fully covered by revenue from main activities and the enterprise receives no funds from the state budget.
