Additional measures to reduce aircraft noise in Vilnius

An additional aircraft noise management tool came into effect in the beginning of December in Vilnius. From now on, pilots can only make the first turn when taking off after reaching higher altitudes; moreover, the first turning point has been moved away further from the densely populated areas of the capital city.

”From December 5 this year, the northbound aircraft can make their first turn according to the standard departure route only after reaching the altitude of at least 4,000 ft (approximately 1,300 m) above sea level. In other words, the altitude will be 1,000 feet or about 300 meters higher than what has been allowed to date”, says Romanas Petrovskis, the Head of the Air Traffic Management Division at Oro Navigacija.

According to him, the turning point of aircraft departing from Vilnius airport was moved almost 2 km further in order to make the turning point more distant from the densely populated areas and to reduce the impact of noise on the residents.

“The turning point that previously was behind the Saulėtekis neighbourhood, has been moved beyond the Nemenčinė highway, which will cause less inconvenience to the residents of densely populated areas”, adds the specialist.

In the spring of this year, Lithuanian airports announced a comprehensive long-term plan for the implementation of integrated noise reduction measures signed with the state enterprise Oro Navigacija, aimed at achieving the most effective result by combining different measures.

Many measures are already in place, including the requirement for aircraft to follow a standardised departure route over low-populated urban areas, a ban on sudden stopping at night-time using the power plant (engine) of the aircraft, which causes significant noise levels. In addition, noisy aircraft engine tests can no longer be carried out at night and aircraft are required to comply with noise abatement procedures during take-off.

In order to answer the most important questions of the inhabitants regarding aircraft noise, the state enterprise Oro Navigacija has prepared the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). They can be found on https://www.oronavigacija.lt/lt/triuksmo-prevencija/
