At all four international airports of Lithuania, the number of flights went up in October. Compared to the same period last year, the double-digit growth in Kaunas and Šiauliai accounted for 16.6 and 22.8 per cent, respectively.
According to the Lithuanian ANS Provider SE Oro navigacija, the number of flights handled at Kaunas and Šiauliai airports made up respectively 942 (16.6 per cent increase) and 410 (22.8 per cent increase) while in Vilnius and Palanga, compared to last year’s October, growth was moderate: 4.5 thousand (2.4 per cent increase) and 385 flights (2.1 per cent increase).
“The most popular flight directions have remained the same. From Lithuania flights are mostly operated to the United Kingdom, Latvia and Germany, while most frequent destinations of aircraft flying the Lithuanian airspace by transit are Russia, Germany and Finland”, noted Mindaugas Gustys, CEO of Oro navigacija, summarizing the latest results.
October saw the largest growth of number of flights operated from Lithuania to the United Kingdom (312 flights, 9.9 per cent increase, compared to last year’s October). The second most popular destination from Lithuania was Latvia (277 flights, 5 per cent increase). Germany was in third place (250 flights, 2.5 per cent increase), and Poland came fourth, with 212 flights (decrease of 12 per cent, compared to last year’s October). At the end of the list of the top five destinations from our country was Denmark (189 flights, 2.7 per cent increase).
The total number of flights handled by Oro navigacija’s specialists in October (24.1 thousand), compared to the same period last year, went up by 3.5 per cent. Overflights accounted for 18.1 thousand, or 75 per cent of the total flights serviced. Compared to October 2018, the number of flights crossing the Lithuanian airspace by transit was higher by 3 per cent.
On the most busiest day – October 10th – air traffic controllers provided services to 868 flights in the Lithuanian airspace, and compared to the peak day in 2018 (832 flights on October 11th), their number was higher by 4.3 per cent. On the peak day of overflights – October 5th – services to 663 aircraft crossing the Lithuanian airspace by transit were provided, and compared to the most busiest day in October a year ago (623 on October 4th 2018), there was a 6.4 per cent increase.
During the ten months of this year, the total flight number made up 230.4 thousand and went up by 1.3 per cent, compared to the same period last year. Out of this number, overflights accounted for 76 per cent. Their number went up by 1.3 per cent, compared to the same period in 2018.
