Flights from Lithuania to the United Kingdom, Latvia and Poland made up the largest number of flights operated from Lithuania in 2018, and as to the flights crossing the Lithuanian airspace by transit, most frequent were overflights to the Russian Federation, Germany and Finland.
Last year, flights from Lithuania were mostly operated to the United Kingdom (3,365 flights), Poland (2,844), Germany (2,793) and Denmark (2,006), according to the State Enterprise Oro navigacija, the Lithuanian Air Navigation Service Provider.
Departures from Lithuania were mostly to Riga (2,903 flights), London (four London airports, 2,534) and Warsaw (2,491). The number of departures to Tallinn and Helsinki were 1,057 and 1,008, respectively.
Most frequent directions of overflights were Russia (46,418 flights), Germany (32,098), Finland (15,502), Latvia (13,801) and Poland (6,077).
It was on the 21st of June (Thursday) that was last year’s peak day. On that day the number of flights handled by Lithuanian air traffic controllers amounted to 958. This number includes all flights of aircraft that crossed the Lithuanian airspace by transit and took off from/landed at one of Lithuanian airports. The number of flights handled on the peak day in 2017, the 8th of June, made up 829, i.e. was less by 13.5 per cent.
Last year, it was on the 16th of June (Saturday) that the largest number of overflights (739) were handled by air traffic controllers of Oro navigacija.
As to aircraft movements in Vilnius airport, their largest number was handled in May (4,427), with the peak day on the 21st of June, Thursday (174). It was in June that the largest number of aircraft movements (912) were operated in Kaunas, with the peak day on the 12th of June, Tuesday. The largest number of aircraft movements (554) from/to Palanga were handled in July, and the peak days were on the 19th of May (Saturday) and the 4th of June (Monday), on each of the two days, services to 31 aircraft were rendered. June was the peak month in Šiauliai (408 flights), with the peak days on the 6th of June (Wednesday) and the 30th of August (Thursday), when 26 aircraft movements were handled on each of the two days.
Just like in 2017, in 2018 the total number of air companies – users of the Lithuanian airspace – made up 542. Although some of the companies withdrew from Lithuania, the new ones came to replace them.
