The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) was established on April 29, 1996, in accordance with the order issued by the Minister of Transport and Communications. The major tasks of the centre include coordination of rescue operations, management of rescue works on accident site or appointment of another authority responsible for fulfillment of these works.
ARCC operates round-the-clock, receiving signals from aircraft or ships in distress or involved in accident, the Vilnius Area Control Centre, the Bodo Coordination Centre (Norway) through COSPAS-SARSAT satellite communications system as well as from other legal and natural persons.
In accordance with a predetermined scheme, the centre shall inform on the accident other search and rescue services operating in the Republic of Lithuania.
The centre collaborates with coordination centres of the Baltic Sea States and other neighbouring countries, which participate in search and rescue operations in accordance with the NATO Partnership for Peace Programme.
In conformity with the interstate agreements on search and rescue, the neighbouring states have commissioned themselves to assist one another. In the event of an accident on the borderline section, the coordination centres of respective states mobilize forces for search and rescue operations.
In collaboration with the US Company Techno-Sciences, the COSPAS-SARSAT system terminal was upgraded in 2011. This innovation manifests that the entire scope of work of ARCC has shifted to the digital era. The well-trained and certified staff of ARCC is prepared to respond immediately to emergency situations. ARCC of the enterprise is completely compatible with the highest international standards.
